This study intends to focus on the artistic and architectural patronage of Frederick II in Sicily (post 1234) – specifically in the Ionic land – retracing the previous historiographic approaches and proposing a reading from an European and not only Mediterranean perspective of the forms of military architecture and its architectural sculpture. The architectural and sculptural features elaborated in the Ionian buildings, a true bridgehead of the still unknown language of the Hohenstaufen Crown, show a diffusion also outside of the Kingdom of Sicily. Beginning from the Forties of the Thirteenth Century, they spread on the Italian peninsula influencing in a short time prestigious geographical areas including the Patrimonium Petri, Tuscany, and Veneto.
