The essay examines the contribution of the painter Agostino Ciampelli (1565-1630) to the renewal of the liturgical apparatus of two ancient basilicas in Rome, promoted by his protector, Cardinal Alessandro di Ottaviano de’ Medici, for the Jubilee year 1600. The study focuses on two silk artefacts designed by the artist: the frontal altar with the Annunciation for S. Maria in Trastevere and the lost «pannus sericus» with the heads of Saints Peter and Paul for the Lateran ciborium. These liturgical objects are analyzed in relation to their respective decorative contexts and in light of newly discovered documents, which make it possible to define some interesting aspects concerning their conception and execution.

Abstract
The essay examines the contribution of the painter Agostino Ciampelli (1565-1630) to the renewal of the liturgical apparatus of two ancient basilicas in Rome, promoted by his protector, Cardinal Alessandro di Ottaviano de’ Medici, for the Jubilee year 1600. The study focuses on two silk artefacts designed by the artist: the frontal altar with the Annunciation for S. Maria in Trastevere and the lost «pannus sericus» with the heads of Saints Peter and Paul for the Lateran ciborium. These liturgical objects are analyzed in relation to their respective decorative contexts and in light of newly discovered documents, which make it possible to define some interesting aspects concerning their conception and execution.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
