Tra un manifesto e lo specchio. Piccola storia del medievalismo tra diaframmi, maniere e pretesti

Abstract What are the relationships between medievalism and medieval history. It is possible to reconstruct a history of medievalism as a field of studies and as a discipline starting from the study of the history of the term to arrive at the current definition of medievalism in relation to Cultural Studies. These are the assumptions from which the essay, placed at the introduction of a section expressly dedicated to medievalism, proposes to consider the evolution of studies on medievalism in recent decades and how this has led to a progressive expansion of the themes, approaches and an inexorable encroachment from the traces of the history of historiography. These multifaceted characteristics of medievalism, which cannot be completely traced back to the parameters of the history of historiography, can also be assessed as an opportunity to examine the possibility of updates and possible extensions of the methodological agenda of medieval historiography and may represent an opportunity for explore the disciplinary boundaries related to the study of medievalism. Medievalism, understood as "continuing process of creating the Middle Ages", can constitute a laboratory to verify the functions and relationships of the discipline of medieval history in Italy with contemporary society. Starting from the awareness that Italian historiography has long caught and highlighted the link between medievalism and history of historiography. In this perspective, in particular, ISIME has constituted an important forum for the comparison and reflection on the relationship between the history of historiography and medievalism.

Quali sono i rapporti tra medievalismo e storia medievale. È possibile ricostruire una storia del medievalismo come campo di studi e come disciplina partendo dallo studio della storia del termine per giungere alle attuali definizioni del medievalismo in rapporto ai Cultural Studies. Sono questi i presupposti a partire dai quali il saggio, posto a introduzione di una sezione espressamente dedicata al medievalismo, si propone di considerare l’evoluzione degli studi sul medievalismo negli ultimi decenni e come questa abbia comportato un allargamento progressivo delle tematiche, degli approcci e uno sconfinamento inesorabile dai tracciati della storia della storiografia. Tali caratteristiche poliedriche del medievalismo, non riconducibili completamente all’interno dei parametri della storia della storiografia, possono essere valutate anche come un’occasione per vagliare la possibilità di aggiornamenti e eventuali ampliamenti dell’agenda metodologica della storiografia medievale e possono rappresentare un’opportunità per esplorare le frontiere disciplinari legate allo studio del medievalismo. Il medievalismo, inteso come “continuing process of creating the Middle Ages”, può costituire un laboratorio per verificare funzioni e relazioni della disciplina della storia medievale in Italia con la società contemporanea. Partendo dalla consapevolezza che la storiografia italiana ha da lungo tempo colto e posto in evidenza il nesso tra medievalismo e storia della storiografia. In questa prospettiva in particolare l’ISIME ha costituito una sede importante per il confronto e la riflessione sui rapporti tra storia della storiografia e medievalismo.
