The essay aims to compare the figure of Stefan George and his Kreis with the historical avant-garde, both in its relationship with the Modern, and – more complex – with the anti-modernist issues, as embodied in the label of the Conservative Revolution. Through this reconnaissance, George’s poetic attitude takes on new perspectives, in particular with regard to the centrality in his artistic and anthropological practice of the concept of “form” which structures his “aesthetic opposition” (Mattenklott) as a modality of aesthetic-political intervention.
