Dai censimenti bibliografici alla storia della cultura e della società. Riflessioni sul ruolo delle biblioteche tra ricerca e comunità

The study of early printed books was for a long time mainly aimed at bibliographic censuses but, especially following L’Apparition du livre by Lucien Febvre and Henri-Jean Martin (1957) the horizons of the history of the book have definitely widened, from the history of printing to the history of publishing and the circulation of books, up to the history of reading. This path converges with the evolution of the field of library history, which is now mainly interested in public services, and in particular in the use of libraries by readers, as it can be traced through library registers and written testimonies. The cataloguing of antiquarian books has largely shifted its attention to the features of specific copies, including provenance and traces of use, and is focusing on the need to describe not simply the single item, but the whole collection and its historical stratification. In this perspective, libraries should devote themselves to a systematic and comprehensive survey of their collections, without abstract divisions by types of materials and periods, giving their contribution, in collaboration with scholars and researchers, to the knowledge and understanding of the history and culture of local communities.

Il lavoro sul libro antico è stato per molto tempo finalizzato principalmente ai censimenti bibliografici ma, soprattutto a seguito de L’Apparition du livre di Lucien Febvre e Henri-Jean Martin (1957) gli orizzonti della storia del libro si sono decisamente allargati, dalla storia della stampa a quella dell’editoria e della circolazione del libro, fino alla storia della lettura. Questo percorso converge con l’evoluzione degli studi di storia delle biblioteche, che si vanno rivolgendo soprattutto ai servizi, e in particolare all’uso delle biblioteche da parte del pubblico, ricostruito tramite registri e testimonianze. Parallelamente, la catalogazione del libro antico ha spostato in gran parte la sua attenzione alle caratteristiche degli esemplari, comprese le provenienze e le tracce d’uso, e sta mettendo a fuoco l’esigenza di descrivere non semplicemente il singolo pezzo, ma l’intera raccolta e la sua stratificazione storica. In questa prospettiva, le biblioteche dovrebbero dedicarsi a una ricognizione sistematica ed esauriente delle loro collezioni, senza dividerle astrattamente per tipi di materiali e periodi, contribuendo così, in collaborazione con il mondo della ricerca, alla ricostruzione della storia e della cultura delle comunità locali.
