After the fall of the Berlin wall, Germans can no longer call each other "those on the other side". New terms are needed to define, first of all, residents of the new Länder of the new enlarged Federal Republic. Everyday speech thus creates - in contrast to the ufficial (and anti-economic) Einwohner der neuen Bundesländer - the neologism Ossis. This term, significantly, is suffixed by the ambiguous diminutive -i, which has positive emotional connotation in an infantile context but is mostly deprecatory when used in the adult world. The contribution examines the use of this suffix as well as the new linguistic relations between Germans referred to as Ossis and Wessis.

Abstract
After the fall of the Berlin wall, Germans can no longer call each other "those on the other side". New terms are needed to define, first of all, residents of the new Länder of the new enlarged Federal Republic. Everyday speech thus creates - in contrast to the ufficial (and anti-economic) Einwohner der neuen Bundesländer - the neologism Ossis. This term, significantly, is suffixed by the ambiguous diminutive -i, which has positive emotional connotation in an infantile context but is mostly deprecatory when used in the adult world. The contribution examines the use of this suffix as well as the new linguistic relations between Germans referred to as Ossis and Wessis.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
