Due to more and more increasing attention of both scientific and legislative fields about environmental problems, shore power technology or cold ironing system has been assumed the important role to reduce marine vessel emissions. Short circuit level compatibility of systems is a problem when a ship power system is connected to a shore electrical grid. This paper aims at presenting a simplified and less laborious methodology for calculating the short-circuit currents in shore power connection system, the 'characteristic current method' (CCM). With this purpose has been developed a comparison between the IEC approach of the short-circuit calculation and the CCM.
