La circolazione delle anfore puniche nell’area laziale e nell’Etruria meridionale

The study of the Punic amphorae in the Tyrrhenian area is currently focused on the centralsouthern area of the Mediterranean and in particular in the Punic sphere areas, while specific studies have been carried out for some areas of southern Italy. Little is known about the punic trade in the Lazio area. The attestations for what concerns the VI-V cent. BC, or the archaic phase, seem to concentrate in the southern Etruria creating a gap in the Roman area and in the so-called Latium Vetus. This lack seems to fill up from the IV cent. BC, perhaps also for historical reasons linked to the different treaties between Carthage and Rome, with attestations even from rural areas, as in the area between Rome and Ostia, then from coastal sites, near the coast such as Ardea and Lavinium, this one object of new studies. These presences continue even after the fall of Carthage. Attestations are found in the area of Ostia and Pontine reporting uninterrupted commercial relations with the area around the Punic metropolis. In the report that is proposed, we intend to outline the state of research for the Lazio area and southern Etruria, expanding the analysis to new contexts to build a first corpus of Punic presences in the middle-Tyrrhenian area.

Lo studio delle anfore puniche in area tirrenica è attualmente concentrato sull’areale centro-sud del Mediterraneo ed in particolar modo nelle aree di sfera punica, mentre studi specifici sono stati effettuati per alcune aree dell’Italia meridionale. Poco si sa sui commerci punici nell’area laziale. Le attestazioni per quel che riguarda il VI-V a.C., ovvero la fase arcaica, sembrano concentrarsi in Etruria meridionale creando un vuoto nell’area romana e nel cosiddetto Latium Vetus. Tale vuoto sembra colmarsi a partire dal IV sec. a.C., forse anche per motivi storici legati ai diversi trattati tra Cartagine e Roma, con attestazioni sia da ambiti rurali, come nell’area tra Roma ed Ostia, che in siti costieri o prossimi alla costa quali Ardea e Lavinium, quest’ultima oggetto di nuovi studi. Queste presenze proseguono anche dopo la caduta di Cartagine. Attestazioni si riscontrano in area ostiense e pontina segnalando ininterrotti rapporti commerciali con l’area attorno alla metropoli punica. Nella relazione che si propone, si intende delineare lo stato delle ricerche per l’area laziale e l’Etruria meridionale, ampliando l’analisi a contesti inediti per costruire un primo corpus delle presenze puniche in area medio-tirrenica.
