EnglishAn important aspect of the European vocation of Vladan Desnica is his relationship with other languages and cultures. For many reasons, mostly biographical and cultural ones, he was emotionally involved with French and, particularly, Italian. Italian language was so present and inherent in Vladan Desnica’s creative individuality that he used it in various circumstances. Especially important is direct use of Italian (single words, syntagmas, and entire sentences) in the literary works of this writer, where this language fulfils three functions (sometimes simultaneously): the intertextual, the mimetic and the structural semantic one. The use of Italian is an integral part of Desnica’s literary language and contains true poetic value.
