"Mercurio" e la critica cinematografica

Rereading the pages of cinema within the brief but intense and forerunning life of the magazine from '44 to '48, the essay tries to reconstruct the recovery and the developments of a debate that, if it sinks its roots in the last years of fascism, acquires strong ideological connotations in the long months of Liberation and in the immediate post-war period. Born from a common idealist matrix and engaged in the will of a "renaissance" of Italian cinema, film criticism is on different sides when not opposed: while the newborn neorealist experience sets out to conclusion, the intellectuals gathered around «Mercurio» seem work on the hypothesis of a "third way".

Rileggendo le pagine di cinema nell'arco della breve ma intensa e precorritrice vita della rivista dal '44 al '48, il saggio tenta di ricostruire la ripresa e gli sviluppi di un dibattito che, se affonda le proprie radici negli ultimi anni del fascismo, acquista nei lunghi mesi della Liberazione e nell'immediato dopoguerra forti connotazioni ideologiche. Nata da una comune matrice idealista e impegnata nella volontà di una “rinascita” del cinema italiano, la critica cinematografica si dispone su versanti diversi quando non opposti: mentre la neonata esperienza neorealista si avvia a conclusione, gli intellettuali riuniti intorno a «Mercurio» sembrano lavorare all'ipotesi di una “terza via”.
