Tivoli area belong to a paper industrial district developed around the 15th century nearby the Aniene river. Thanks to long tradition and richness in term of number of factories, it can be considered one of the main paper industrial districts of Lazio. The Amicucci-Parmegiani paper mill is located in an archaeological area subject to legal protection of landscape, which shows the evidences of the town's past, both before and after the industrialization process. In order to recover both buildings and landscape system, it is necessary to look for a design approach appropriate for meet the functional needs of the buildings and the safeguard of historical landscape where they are situated. This paper is an overview of a research carried out in the graduation thesis laboratory Project for building renovation and restoration by prof. Edoardo Currà (master degree in Building Engineering-Architecture). The research aims to describe the construction features of one of the paper mills belong to Tivoli area through the characterization of the factory, the definition of its construction phases and the identification of the relationship with the surrounding landscape. In particular, the paper highlights the need for a design approach aware of the landscape context in which the paper mill is locate along with its historical value, combining promotion of the historical evidences in the area, the connection with the town and the preservation of industrial memory.
