The equilibrium between human settlements and natural areas is one of the most relevant issue involving contemporary cities and their surrounding territories, including a variety of aspects. It deals with the issues related to climate change, migration, desertification, natural hazards, natural resources, food security. More generally it deals with the increasingly unstable balance between urbanization and human survival on the one hand, and the need to re-define models of equilibrium between preceding and new urban conditions in a fast-changing society on the other.
