The paper discusses the result of a biometric study on the two species Melonis pompilioides and M. barleeanus from circalittoral and upper bathyal sediments of Pliocene, Pleistocene and Holocene of Central Italy. Quantitative data on the general morphology of the specimens, combined with qualitative characters of their test, permit to have clear elements to distinguish the two species that are often not correctly recognised. In the Holocene sediments specimens of M. pompilioides having smaller and less inflated tests than those of Pliocene-Pleistocene are present and this is the reason of the different ranges of biometric variability of this species in the Holocene and Pliocene-Pleistocene samples.

Abstract
The paper discusses the result of a biometric study on the two species Melonis pompilioides and M. barleeanus from circalittoral and upper bathyal sediments of Pliocene, Pleistocene and Holocene of Central Italy. Quantitative data on the general morphology of the specimens, combined with qualitative characters of their test, permit to have clear elements to distinguish the two species that are often not correctly recognised. In the Holocene sediments specimens of M. pompilioides having smaller and less inflated tests than those of Pliocene-Pleistocene are present and this is the reason of the different ranges of biometric variability of this species in the Holocene and Pliocene-Pleistocene samples.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
