Abstract
The harbour of Pyrgi hosted the great maritime sanctuary of Caere, in the Archaic period one of the main cities of the Mediterranean. The sanctuary, the only one in Etruria mentioned by Greek sources, included two distinct sacred areas and was monumentalized in its northern district by the tyrant Thefarie Velianas (510 BC). Despite the connection with the Phoenician-Punic world expressed by the dedication of the sanctuary on the famous gold laminae, there was no archaeological trace of a frequentation of the area by Phoenician seamen until the recent discovery of five oil lamps, found in one of the buildings in the so-called "Quartiere pubblico- cerimoniale" currently under excavation.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
