Puntualizzazioni sui restauri degli anni Trenta e Quaranta del Novecento ai mosaici di Torriti e Rusuti in S. Maria Maggiore a Roma

The intervention points out the issues and results from the restoration process of the Thirties and the Forties on the mosaics of Torriti and Rusuti in Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome, focusing on the management of the worksite and on various methodological choices underlying the several operations conducted. Particular attention is given to some innovative graphic documentation techniques for the reproduction of the mosaic, which products are still preserved within the Vatican Museums. In this regard, the multifunctional use of photographic prints with annotations for a precise identification of various conservative issues, and the realization of plaster casts to transmit figurative and the plastic values of the mosaic are particularly interesting.
