This paper analyses the trompe l’oeil painted by Andrea Pozzo in the Salone delle Feste in Palazzo Contucci in Montepulciano. It examines how the artist created the credible illusory architecture in order to perceptively transform architectural space. The analysis, accompanied by the interpretation and geometric reconstruction of the architectural and compositional types present in the scene, involves the geometric de-construction and virtual reconstruction of the painted architecture in order to identify the probable measurements, proportions and forms of the depicted elements. The study also revealed Pozzo’s expert use of the rules of perspective and appropriate optical expedients typical of theatrical art.

Abstract
This paper analyses the trompe l’oeil painted by Andrea Pozzo in the Salone delle Feste in Palazzo Contucci in Montepulciano. It examines how the artist created the credible illusory architecture in order to perceptively transform architectural space. The analysis, accompanied by the interpretation and geometric reconstruction of the architectural and compositional types present in the scene, involves the geometric de-construction and virtual reconstruction of the painted architecture in order to identify the probable measurements, proportions and forms of the depicted elements. The study also revealed Pozzo’s expert use of the rules of perspective and appropriate optical expedients typical of theatrical art.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
