The church of Santa Maria del Suffragio in Ravenna has been traditionally attributed to the architect Francesco Fontana (1668-1708). The construction of the building, however, was the result of a Fontana family commitment, involving the elderly father Carlo (1636-1714), who was appointed when the interior vault suffered an unexpected collapse in 1710 seeing to the completion of the church. Due to the poor quality of the materials used in the construction, and the lacking ability of the craftsmen, the structure was renovated towards the end of the 18th century under the supervision of the noble local professional Camillo Morigia (1743-1795). This paper proposes a reinterpretation – relying both on documents and written evidences of the chroniclers – of the history and the role of individual players, as well as the specific features of the design, and, finally, the influence that this church had within the regional artistic panorama during the late Baroque age.
