Appropriation processes of river banks as places of a society’s public life have always, and especially in these last decades, affected several European cities. The river’s edge, becoming a meeting place, turning itself into a square, is the space in which the dialogue between urban reality and water, between artifice and nature takes place, and is the scenario in which the public life of the city that lies along it takes place. Once they have found their own space above water and after having defined its conformation, cities have begun, as the very nature of urban settlement requires, to experiment with all the possible meanings that these places could take on; they have begun to push themselves into the water in all their forms and with all their functions, transforming what originally was a purely public space, into a place with a privatized and economically efficient character. Today, there is a renewed tension towards the water, the aim of which is to overcome the barrier of floating buildings, self-imposed by the development of the city itself, which has been incapable of conveying its developments.
Processi di appropriazione dei margini fluviali come luoghi della vita pubblica di una società hanno riguardato, da sempre, e in particolar modo negli ultimi decenni, diverse città europee. Il margine del fiume, diventando luogo d’incontro, facendosi piazza, è lo spazio in cui avviene il dialogo tra contesto urbano e acqua, tra artificio e natura, e costituisce lo scenario in cui si svolge la vita pubblica della città che vi si accosta. Una volta trovato il proprio spazio a contatto diretto con l’acqua e dopo averne definita la conformazione, le città hanno iniziato, come la natura stessa dell’insediamento urbano impone, a sperimentare tutte le possibili accezioni che questi luoghi potessero assumere; edifici galleggianti hanno cominciato a spingersi in acqua in ogni loro forma e con ogni loro funzione, trasformando quello che in origine era uno spazio puramente pubblico, in luogo dal carattere privatizzato ed economicamente efficiente. Si delinea oggi una rinnovata tensione verso l’acqua, il cui fine è quello di superare la barriera degli edifici galleggianti autoimposta dallo svilupparsi della città stessa, che è stata incapace di veicolarne gli sviluppi.
