To the thresholds of the Great Revolution, the European public opinion assisted to an unusual and vehement ideological dispute that had a particular ground of competition in the political-religious deciphering of the Middle Ages. Middle Ages was the key to interpret the present and to support his own cultural strategy. The reference to the antiquity was a diffused practice during the "Settecento riformatore", as said Venturi, and was not abandned in the comparison with the new republican governments born on the French revolutionary.
