Background. Polarized polychromatic noncoherent light is used in medicine for the treatment of a wide range of medical conditions. Its effect of activator and modulator of biological processes can be a valid adjunctive therapy in the treatment of periodontitis. Materials and methods. Forty adult patients affected by chronic periodontitis were included in our study and randomly divided in two groups. Test group received low level light application in addiction to traditional mechanical periodontal therapy, while control group received only full mouth scaling and root planing. Results. Clinical indexes were reduced in both groups, highly in test group. Conclusions. Low level polarized polychromatic noncoherent light seems to be an effective additional therapy in the management of adult chronic periodontitis, as it reduces clinical indexes, particularly Gingival Index.
