Abstract
ope Paul V Borghese, in his early years of pontificate, prepares for Trastevere a serie of urban redevelopment works. Within this urban restructuring, he restores ancient buildings and builds new architectures; moreover he designs new roads. In this period the square of Santa Maria in Trastevere becomes a central knot of this new network of religious architectures and pilgrimage routes. The church and the square of Santa Maria become a hub, between the northern part of the district (already densely built) and its southern part for the new expan- sion of the city. However, only in the Baroque time the square becomes a focal point of the area. The square or- ganized by Pope Alexander VII becomes a “theatre”. in this particular form of the scenic city: churches, palaces, houses, ancient monuments, streets and squares are integrated between them. In this situation the fountain is an essential part of the composition. This fountain built in the square in 1471, which is placed by Pope Chigi in the center of the square, in the 17th century assumes an aesthetic role and a functional importance. The fountain has been restored several times over the centuries. Bramante, Bernini, intervened there. Even Carlo Fontana adjusts it.
