This paper summarizes some of the outcome of a six-month research project about landscape architecture education in Europe, carried out in 2018 for Fondazione Benetton Studi Ricerche and with the guidance of UNISCAPE. The work consists of a survey into the development of landscape architecture in some European countries, identifying specific aspects as well as the more common areas of the process; the aim is to outline a scenario that can serve as a basis for further investigation into possible common ground for the future of landscape architecture education in Europe. The paper outlines some of the key roles of this development process, particularly in the early decades of the century, as the role of pioneers figures, professional associations and the drive of political and social changes. The outcomes are not to be read exclusively through a historical lens, but also as an attempt to build awareness of the driving forces involved in the evolution of landscape architecture.
