Patients and physicians' feelings about the residents involvement (RI) in surgical procedures as a potential cause of increased operative times, complication rate, and outcomes worsening may lead to inappropriate teaching programs and jeopardize the future of the health care system. Patel et al1 should be congratulated for this comprehensive analysis of data from the National Surgical Quality Improvement Program database, aimed at assessing the influence of RI on perioperative outcomes of 39,700 patients treated between 2006 and 2011. The findings confirmed increased age and comorbidity as significant predictors of perioperative complications.

Abstract

Patients and physicians' feelings about the residents involvement (RI) in surgical procedures as a potential cause of increased operative times, complication rate, and outcomes worsening may lead to inappropriate teaching programs and jeopardize the future of the health care system. Patel et al1 should be congratulated for this comprehensive analysis of data from the National Surgical Quality Improvement Program database, aimed at assessing the influence of RI on perioperative outcomes of 39,700 patients treated between 2006 and 2011. The findings confirmed increased age and comorbidity as significant predictors of perioperative complications.
