The churches of S. Gregorio Barbarigo in the Eur district and the SS. Martyrs of Uganda in the locality of Poggio Ameno in Rome, are built on a drawing by Giuseppe Vaccaro, between 1968 and 1972 and 1968 and 1980. The study rebuild the design path and the constructive phases of the two buildings, to identify the figurative, symbolic and religious meanings of the formal choices of the architect, partially altered now by subsequent interventions. These values are recognizable in the distributive system, in the structures and in the decorative apparatus of the two churches and they must be handed down to the future because define the present image and testify to the Vaccaro’s creativity. The essay analyze the problems of intervention on the modern constructed space and prospects operative strategies for the architecture of the second twentieth century, to combine the needs of the protection of its meanings and the authenticity of the materials (even with serious deteriorations), with those of the functional improvement necessary for today's use. In conclusion, the contribution underlines the necessity to employ for buildings that have a few decades of life the procedures of the restoration, to face the technical-constructive and degradation problems of the preservation of the new architecture, respecting its spatiality understood as “imagery place”.
