A method (S1-S8) serves to detect a presence of at least one person (P *) in a given spatial area (RB) by means of at least one camera (K), wherein by means of the at least one camera (K) a sequence of images (B, B (t), B (t), B (t)) of the spatial region (RB) is recorded (S1), based on at least one image (B, B (t), B (t), B (t)) of the image sequence a person recognition is carried out (S2) and a person object (P '(t)) recognized by the person recognition is then classified as a real person (P * (t)) or remains (S4) if the person object (P' (t) ) can be assigned to a motion detected by an image analysis of multiple images (B, B (t), B (t), B (t)) of the image sequence (S3). An image-processing monitoring system (A, K) has at least one camera (K) which monitors a predetermined spatial area (RB) and an evaluation device (A) for evaluation by means of the images (B, B (t) taken by the at least one camera (K), B (t), B (t)), wherein the monitoring system is arranged to execute the method (S1-S8).
