In 2013, Chinese President Xi Jinping officially launched the “One belt, one road” initiative. It is an ambitious plan focused on connectivity and cooperation among countries along two main routes: the land-based “Silk Road Economic Belt” and the ocean-going “21st Century Maritime Silk Road”. But now it seems that this project is expanding into a whole new realm – the outer space. Based on Chinese language sources, this essay offers a preliminary analysis of the so-called “Space Silk Road”, through an outline of the official documents issued by the Chinese government between 2015 and 2018. It also highlights the opportunities for international cooperation in space offered by the “One belt, one road” initiative. In conclusion, this essay will briefly mention some possible military applications of space technology along the Belt and Road.
