This paper provides a reflection on the relations between Sextus Empiricus' neo-pyrrhonism and the philosophic vision of Michael Oakeshott. Even if Oakeshott defines himself as a sceptic, he quotes Sextus only once throughout all his work. But just this one quote reveals some interesting analogies between the relevance of the tradition and the practice life in some social and political contexts, characterised by the contingency and the conditions of the time. Ancient Scepticism, assimilated by way of Montaigne and Hobbes, the philosophers who gave Oakeshott an idea of the human condition suspended between passion and reason, conservation and change, is reinterpreted bu the English philosopher in a original and personal way, both in his anti-dogmatic conception of politics and of philosophy from the point of view of attitude and not as a doctrine.

Abstract
This paper provides a reflection on the relations between Sextus Empiricus' neo-pyrrhonism and the philosophic vision of Michael Oakeshott. Even if Oakeshott defines himself as a sceptic, he quotes Sextus only once throughout all his work. But just this one quote reveals some interesting analogies between the relevance of the tradition and the practice life in some social and political contexts, characterised by the contingency and the conditions of the time. Ancient Scepticism, assimilated by way of Montaigne and Hobbes, the philosophers who gave Oakeshott an idea of the human condition suspended between passion and reason, conservation and change, is reinterpreted bu the English philosopher in a original and personal way, both in his anti-dogmatic conception of politics and of philosophy from the point of view of attitude and not as a doctrine.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
