Brazilian culture has often made recourse to the biblical tradition in order to define its own identity. In the image of paradise, it found a metaphor to signify the meaning of the nation. This essay aims at debating the contradictions and paradoxes of this biblical metaphor in the writings of three pre-modern authors: Euclides da Cunha, Graça Aranha, and Alberto Rangel.
