Abstract
In Cratinus’ All-Seers fr. 161 K.-A., the best manuscript of the Enchiridion of Hephaestion (Ambrosianus i 8) reads the hyperdorism ἀριθματοί. Cratinus’ editors have traditionally changed the transmitted text. Kassel and Austin keep ἀριθματοί, but report it as «valde suspectum». Against the general scepticism, this paper argues for the medical and philosophical implications of ἀριθματοί, and claims that the hyperdoric form served the purpose of recalling the cultural background of the southern Italian and Sicilian Greek colonies.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
