Gli “sguardi” su Roma medievale (IV-XII secolo) negli ultimi trent’anni di studi

The 80s of the 20th century saw the publication of several significant essays and monographs devoted to medieval art in Rome. Some among these books were to represent – in the subsequent years – a substantial challenge and an occasion of debate for younger generations of scholars. The paper is specifically aimed at analysing the whole of scientific literature produced throughout the last thirty years in the domain of the artistic production of the city of Rome from the 4th until the 12th century. In this sense, what would be the main target of this study is to provide the reader with an overall critical approach to the recent scholarship on that subject, together with a close examination of its mainstream perspectives, the most popular research fields, and the methodologies involved.
