Archaeological research of the grille-échiquier form, considerations about the museum-instrument, analysis of the inner exhibition value of the artwork. These are the three threads of a weave which Damisch has twisted unsystematically during the nineties. Only referring to them it is possible to understand the reason and the characteristics of the exposition choice, made at Boijmans Van Beuningen Museum in the summer of 1997. Moves: plying chess and cards with the museum, this is the selected title for an exhibition in which Damisch’s artistic and historical research clarifies its philosophical origins and anthropological interests. On that occasion the suggestion of an open concept of history and the reflection on the meaning to give to this idea in the artistic field on the visual form. The study of the attraction of the artwork and the role of the spectator contribute to redefine the function and the characteristics of the museum-instrument.

Abstract
