Abstract
Due to the rapid aging of the word population new technological solutions for seniors’ houses must be developed; Focusing on Europe, according to Eurostat, the population on 2016 was estimated to be 510.3 million, 65 million of them are seniors (19.2%) and the number is increasing. This trend brings the necessity to address the increasing number of seniors with innovative technological solution to preserve and improve “ageing”. World Health Organisation uses the term “ageing well”, one of the most challenging paradigms of the new millennia. It can be described as “the process of optimizing opportunities for health, participation and security to enhance the quality of life as people age.” The goal is not to add years to life, but to add quality to life. The new young seniors are called “Yeepies:” Young Energetic Elderly People into Everything. They want to be involved in the society for as long as possible and want to organize their own lives independently. This situation can change with years bringing old people to be stuck at home. Smart houses for seniors must attend people trough ageing from the Yeepies age up to the “last years”, addressing different necessities and problems. Recently, a shift from technological-centered solutions towards human-centered solutions changed the paradigm of “smart house” to a house build around the users’ needs. An integrated approach, able to make the living environment, comfortable, secure, and accessible is fundamental for seniors and is a topic still under investigation. Moreover, smart systems should be installable both in new and old houses (retrofitting) for all the seniors that are unable or do not want to move. Smart houses are particularly important for people with reduce mobilities or disease, where an automatic system can really improve their quality of life. This work is intended to define the best-practice and systems suitable to address the senior wellbeing in their houses by the emplyment smart technologies.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
