16 ottobre 1943: una data del calendario civile o un problema della nostra storia? Note su alcune recenti pubblicazioni

This review analyses some recent studies dedicated to the deportation of the Jews of Rome, which allow us to focus on some important historical issues related to that event and to reflect upon its importance for the identity and memory of contemporary Italy. According to the author, four main themes emerge from these researches. First, the need to place the Roman affair within the overall policy of Nazi Germany towards the Jews in occupied Europe. Second, the role of the Catholic Church in this specific context. Third, the behaviour of institutions and society during and after the months of German occupation. Fourth, the ways of transmission of the memory of October, 16, 1943 in the republican age, beyond institutional obligations, ceremonials and the rhetoric of politics. The publications examined in this review open new research perspectives on these aspects, they help to focus on the contours, limits and conditioning of the processes of memory construction and suggest to study this subject in its implications and long-term consequences, in a close and dialectic relationship with Italy's contemporary political and cultural events.

Oggetto di questa rassegna sono alcuni studi recenti dedicati alla deportazione degli ebrei di Roma, che consentono di mettere a fuoco importanti nodi storici della vicenda e di sviluppare la riflessione sul posto da essa occupato nell'identità e nella memoria dell'Italia contemporanea. Secondo l'autore, quattro temi principali emergono da queste ricerche. La necessità di collocare la vicenda romana all'interno della politica complessiva della Germania nazista nei confronti degli ebrei nell'Europa occupata. Il ruolo della Chiesa cattolica in questo specifico contesto. I comportamenti delle istituzioni e della società durante e dopo i mesi dell'occupazione tedesca. Le modalità di trasmissione della memoria del 16 ottobre 1943 nell'età repubblicana, al di là degli obblighi istituzionali, dei cerimoniali e delle retoriche della politica. Su questi aspetti, i risultati delle pubblicazioni prese in esame aprono nuove prospettive di ricerca, aiutano a mettere a fuoco contorni, limiti e condizionamenti dei processi di costruzione della memoria e suggeriscono di studiare il tema nelle sue implicazioni e conseguenze di lungo periodo, in un rapporto stretto e dialettico con le contemporanee vicende politiche e culturali del paese.
