The paper presents the project NOTAE (NOT A writtEn word but graphic symbols. An evidence-based reconstruction of another written world in pragmatic literacy from Late Antiquity to early medieval Europe), which represents the first attempt to investigate the presence of graphic symbols in documentary records as a historical phenomenon from Late Antiquity to early medieval Europe. The project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme (grant agreement no. 786572, Advanced Grant 2017, PI Antonella Ghignoli) and is hosted by Sapienza Università di Roma from 01 July 2018 to 30 June 2023.
