The architectural remains discovered in 1837 under the block of San Salvatore in Campo are commonly attributed to the Temple of Mars in Circus dedicated by Brutus Callaicus after his triumph over Gallaecia. The work was entrusted to the Greek architect Hermodoros of Salamina, probably a second-generation student of Hermogenes. There have been numerous attempts to reconstruct the building; on its aspect is partly based the role played by his architect in the formation of Late-Republican architectural language in Rome. Through a new reading of some documents it is possible to obtain new data useful to the discussion on the possible shapes of the temple and, consequently, to provide new elements on the figure of Hermodoros.

Abstract
The architectural remains discovered in 1837 under the block of San Salvatore in Campo are commonly attributed to the Temple of Mars in Circus dedicated by Brutus Callaicus after his triumph over Gallaecia. The work was entrusted to the Greek architect Hermodoros of Salamina, probably a second-generation student of Hermogenes. There have been numerous attempts to reconstruct the building; on its aspect is partly based the role played by his architect in the formation of Late-Republican architectural language in Rome. Through a new reading of some documents it is possible to obtain new data useful to the discussion on the possible shapes of the temple and, consequently, to provide new elements on the figure of Hermodoros.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
