The first monetary issues of Athens are analyzed, the Wappenmünzen and the archaic owls. An overview of coin types is followed by a study on monetary system, with particular attention to weights and to the choice of the denominations, with the aim of understanding the functions coins had in Athenian society at the end of the VIth cent. BC.
