The history of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of mental disorders (DSM), the orthodox manual of psychiatric taxonomy, can show the changes within Western Psychiatry in the last half century. This article presents the manual and his history, recent criticisms and alternative suggestions from two expanding fields of research, Molecular Neurobiology and Cognitive Neuroscience.
