The attention towards the registration of damage to ancient archaeological sites and historical places in the Mediterranean and the Near East has increased because of the frequency of deliberate destruction. Satellite images are a fundamental and useful instrument but are not sufficient: on the one hand, they allow the systematic registration of the situation and condition of each area and can be used as a preliminary fundamental instrument before starting any activities in the field; on the other hand, the recovery of damage of archaeological areas can be only done by direct observation in the field, registering anomalies of the surface, depth of the wells, extent of the damage and heaps of soil.

Abstract
The attention towards the registration of damage to ancient archaeological sites and historical places in the Mediterranean and the Near East has increased because of the frequency of deliberate destruction. Satellite images are a fundamental and useful instrument but are not sufficient: on the one hand, they allow the systematic registration of the situation and condition of each area and can be used as a preliminary fundamental instrument before starting any activities in the field; on the other hand, the recovery of damage of archaeological areas can be only done by direct observation in the field, registering anomalies of the surface, depth of the wells, extent of the damage and heaps of soil.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
