This paper discusses some quotations from Hesiod in the scholia to Homer. Several notes on lexical, geographical and mythological issues attest that ancient scholars often established a precise relationship of derivation between the two poets: Hesiod read and interpreted the Homeric text, and therefore he had lived later than Homer. Moreover, Hesiod’s readings of the Homeric poems are often discussed with terms similar to those used for scholarly exegesis. Even if sometimes, according to the scholia, Hesiod interpreted the Homeric text accurately, he is often accused of misunderstanding the text of the epics.

Abstract
This paper discusses some quotations from Hesiod in the scholia to Homer. Several notes on lexical, geographical and mythological issues attest that ancient scholars often established a precise relationship of derivation between the two poets: Hesiod read and interpreted the Homeric text, and therefore he had lived later than Homer. Moreover, Hesiod’s readings of the Homeric poems are often discussed with terms similar to those used for scholarly exegesis. Even if sometimes, according to the scholia, Hesiod interpreted the Homeric text accurately, he is often accused of misunderstanding the text of the epics.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
