Abstract

The proposed research refers to the traditional architecture studies and, particularly, it focuses on the antiseismic vernacular presides: direct testimony of local seismic cultures that, necessarily, some populations had to developed through history. The research aims to discover and describe in these building practices their sustainable and resilient features. The pre-modern architecture keeps in itself some characteristics due to the particular environment, climate and local culture. These kinds of structures had been modified and regenerated along history, through circular processes of direct involvement of the communities in the transformation practices of their living places. The many survey campaigns carried out in post-earthquake situation in Nepal, India, Portugal, Turkey and Italy highlighted as different kind of structures resisted to the calamity occurred in the areas: that was possible according to the presence of adequate foundations, high masonry thickness, vertical and/or horizontal wooden elements in the masonry texture. This research particularly concerns the analysis of the horizontal wooden element as antiseismic preside; here in the article it will be called ‘ring beam’ although its different names in local traditions: for example hatil in Turkey, or taq in India. In this contest, it seems interesting to understand how these technological elements would be reused nowadays; it is then necessary to deeply analyse their effective contribute to the global structures behaviour in order to get back its practice in places were would be still suitable and appropriate. The research of a satisfactory scientifc results, indispensable nowadays in order to reintroduce these technologies, should necessarily comprehend two kinds of analytical approaches: empirical considerations for qualitative results and, through the use of numerical modelling tools, applied analyses in order to reach quantitative results. The frst step proposed, in order to increase the knowledge upon this vernacular technology is here presented through a frst phase of bibliography research.
