the most important data on the early development of complex societies in southern italy (and particu- larly in south-eastern regions) during the Bronze age prevailingly come (because of different reasons) from coastal settlements and from inland and sub-coastal funerary contexts. typical elements are the development of transmarine exchange relationships, founded on traditional links, and the formation of specialized centres. the recent development of researches in sub-coastal and inland areas, especially systematic surveys, could help us to study in detail the role of the inland areas in the framework of the transformation process we take consideration.
