Trattative senza speranza. La Delegazione ungherese alla Conferenza della Pace

In January 1919 the Peace Conference opened in Paris, where the Hungarian delegation arrived only in the following December. The complex and difficult situation in Hungary - where a Bolshevik government had been in power between March and August 1919 – it was at the center of bitter debates due to the ambitions of the successor States and the interests of the Powers. It is also necessary to point out that the choice adopted by the Conference was to avoid any kind of negotiation with the defeated countries, thereby further aggravating Budapest’s position and making it impossible for the Hungarian Delegation to obtain any concrete results. A fundamental part of this article is based on the analysis of Hungarian documentation concerning the Peace Conference and the one that follows is the narration of the difficult negotiations carried out by the Hungarian Delegation in the vain attempt to mitigate the peace conditions imposed by the victorious powers, through the cross-analysis of the diplomatic sources of the many countries involved. This is a matter of great interest and offers many ideas for understanding the Peace Conference; a story that ended formally on June 4, 1920 with the signing of the peace treaty in the Grand Trianon palace without however succeeding in putting an end to the disputes between Hungary and the successor States.

Nel gennaio 1919 si apriva a Parigi la Conferenza della Pace, dove la delegazione ungherese giunse solo nel dicembre successivo. La complessa e difficile situazione ungherese – dove tra marzo e agosto 1919 era stato al potere un governo bolscevico – fu al centro di aspri dibattiti a causa delle ambizioni degli Stati successori e degli interessi delle Potenze. È inoltre necessario evidenziare che la scelta adottata dalla Conferenza fu quella di evitare ogni tipo di negoziato con i paesi sconfitti, aggravando con ciò ulteriormente la posizione di Budapest e mettendo di fatto la Delegazione ungherese nell’impossibilità di ottenere alcun risultato sul piano concreto. Una parte fondamentale di questo contributo è fondato sull’analisi della documentazione ungherese relativa alla Conferenza della Pace e quella che segue, è la narrazione delle difficili trattative svolte dalla Delegazione ungherese nel vano tentativo di mitigare le condizioni di pace imposte dalle potenze vincitrici, attraverso l’analisi incrociata delle fonti diplomatiche dei paesi coinvolti. Si tratta di una vicenda di grande interesse e che offre molti spunti per la comprensione della Conferenza di Pace; una vicenda che si concluse formalmente il 4 giugno 1920 con la firma del trattato di pace nel palazzo del Grand Trianon senza però che ciò riuscisse a porre fine alle dispute tra l’Ungheria e gli Stati successori.
