From model to data and back. Probability and Statistical Inference for the Piano Nazio- nale Lauree Scienti che · In this work we describe a lecture plan of Statistics and Probability proposed in two editions (2016 and 2017) of a Summer School of Mathematics held at Sapienza University of Rome. The initiative was organized in the context of Piano Nazionale Lauree Scien- ti che – i.e. a national project aimed at promoting and di using scienti c master degrees pro- grammes – with speci c reference to Mathematics and Statistics. The activity involved about 160 students of the last two years of secondary school. The main goal is to show students, through the metaphor of a round-trip journey, the interactive role of the two phases of a statistical ex- periment: the probabilistic formalization of a phenomenon through the statistical model and the estimation of the unknown parameters of the same model. The speci city of the proposal is to base the inductive phase of the process (the return of the trip) on the key-concept of Likeli- hood function.
