Vatican Chapels. Al posto di un padiglione

Vatican Chapels. In Lieu of a Pavilion. An undeclared antithesis is what makes the Vatican Chapels at the Venice Biennale such a fecund operation. On one hand the challenge issued by the Holy See to the world of architecture by stripping itself bare to initiate a new discussion of the meaning of the sacred; on the other hand, the attempt-challenge to contemporary architecture to seek the meaning of what it wishes to represent solely within itself. What emerges is the unresolved node of the relationship with transcendence in an era simultaneously marked by immanence and a widespread and indistinct need for religion. The chapels in the forest on the Island of San Giorgio face one another and establish an almost silent dialogue akin to that of the small chapel by Asplund in the Stockholm cemetery. This is recognisable in the sober silent beauty of the chapel by Eduardo Souto de Moura, in the brutalist expression of Smiljan Radic and – at the extreme opposite – in diverse forms of lightweight construction: from the unsettling play of suspended equilibriums created by Javier Corvalán to the awe-inspiring delicacy proposed by the Brazilian Carla Juaçaba who, with a simple gesture, brings all of the sacredness of Asplund’s work outside, into the forest.

Vatican Chapels. Al posto di un padiglione Una antitesi non dichiarata rende feconda l’operazione delle Vatican Chapels alla Biennale di Venezia. C’è da una parte la sfida della Santa Sede al mondo dell’Architettura, nello spogliarsi di quasi tutto per riavviare un dialogo sul senso del sacro; e c’è dall’altra, il tentativo-sfida dell’architettura contemporanea nel cercare solo dentro se stessa le ragioni ultime di ciò che si vuole rappresentare. Emerge così il nodo irrisolto del rapporto con la trascendenza in un’era che è contemporaneamente segnata dall’immanenza e da un diffuso, indistinto bisogno di religiosità. Le cappelle nel bosco dell’Isola di San Giorgio si traguardano tra loro in un dialogo sommesso che nella piccola cappella realizzata da Asplund nel cimitero di Stoccolma trova un riferimento comune. Riconoscibile nella sobria bellezza silenziosa messa in opera da Souto de Moura, o nell’espressività brutalista di Smiljan Radic, fino – all’estremo opposto – nelle diverse forme di leggerezza costruttiva: dallo spiazzante gioco di equilibri sospesi di Javier Corvalán, alla meravigliosa delicatezza proposta dalla brasiliana Carla Juaçaba che con un semplice gesto riporta all’aperto, nel bosco, la sacralità di Asplund.
