English gardens or landscape parks are works of art that, although beautiful in themselves, are fully realized only when they are lived, admired, and, above all, walked through. The work of art is no longer seen as concluded in itself: the viewer plays a fundamental part. The criterion of judgment seems to be no longer the absolute beauty but the associative power and the emotional value that the work implements. This new sensitivity discovered and required the observer's physicality. These aspects of picturesque aesthetics will allow to design gardens and architectures according to theatrical and narrative methods, and sometimes with poetic rhythms.
