The Congregation of the Mission, a religious order founded by St. Vincenzo de’ Pauli in 1625, gained popularity and diffusion in Italy in the first half of the eighteenth century: in that period new houses were opened and churches were built. One of the most interesting establishments was in Tivoli (1729), where a convent was erected and a pre-existing church dedicated to the Santissima Annunziata was restored. This essay analyses the intervention carried on the old church out, which consisted of a restoration, an adaptation of the building to the liturgical requirements of the priests, and a style renovation, according to the Borrominist tendencies diffused in Rome at that time. An accurate typological analysis highlights many similarities between the type of the church and the Baroque architectural production in Lombardy and in Liguria: the sacred building is compared with some famous works by Francesco Maria Ricchino, an architect who had a significant influence on the development of religious architecture in many regions of northern Italy, but also in central Europe. Such assonances can be explained by the Genoese origin of the church’s designer, Father Bernardo della Torre, architect of the religious order.

Abstract
Such assonances can be explained by the Genoese origin of the church’s designer, Father Bernardo della Torre, architect of the religious order.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
