This paper focuses on a Greek papyrus fragment, preserving about 15 lines of an otherwise unknown prose text of historical/ethnographical subject: its anonymous author describes the way of life of a group of persons (their identity remains unspecified because of the fragmentary conditions of the papyrus), whose hardness causes the astonishment of Agesilaos. Of this puzzling frag- ment is provided a new critical edition together with thorough commentary, and then is for the first time suggested to identify the unknown people with the Persians and to assign the authorship of the work to the historian Theopom- pos of Chios.

Abstract

This paper focuses on a Greek papyrus fragment, preserving about 15 lines of an otherwise unknown prose text of historical/ethnographical subject: its anonymous author describes the way of life of a group of persons (their identity remains unspecified because of the fragmentary conditions of the papyrus), whose hardness causes the astonishment of Agesilaos. Of this puzzling frag- ment is provided a new critical edition together with thorough commentary, and then is for the first time suggested to identify the unknown people with the Persians and to assign the authorship of the work to the historian Theopom- pos of Chios.
