S.M.S.R.: perché?

Reading again some early works of Raffaele Pettazzoni about "Storia delle religioni", we know that he wanted to create a special library and a journal. Yet, it is only making a serious scientific investigation that we can understand the whys and the wherefores of his wish: the idea of Pettazzoni about the publication of an academic journal goes back to 1909. In that year, the publication of the book The Study of Religion in the Italian Universities, by L.H. Jordan (Oxford) shook the historic-religious consciousness of Pettazzoni. The Belgian scholar Goblet d'Alviella - so Pettazzoni wrote - "osservò che sarebbe stato meglio intitolarlo La mancanza degli studi religiosi nelle Università italiane". 1909 is an important year for the Italian "Storia delle religioni" for another reason too. In the prefation to La religione primitiva in Sardegna. Pettazzoni wrote that his book "nacque sotto gli auspici dell'archeologia - Pettazzoni was studying, in that time, the Sardinian temple of Serri - eppure esso non era destinato più specialmente agli archeologi che ai filologi che agli etnologi. Per sua natura, il libro voleva essere un saggio di Storia delle religioni: un tentativo di costruzione scientifica in un campo storico-religioso pressoché inesplorato come era quello della Sardegna primitiva".
