Sumo is a Japan's ancient ritual sport. This essay covers some aspects of its world: history, traditions, and links with Shinto and Bushido. The subject of our debate will be an attempt of showing as a wrestling style and the culture of a people can become pervaded with themselves. In the opinion of D. Simmons (The Strong Men of the Sacred Circle, AA, 4, 1, 1991, 47-71), as an example, "sumo's rituals are modern reconstructions or even a deliberate reaching for the past". In a different way, according to us, sumo is a real epitome of Japaneseness.
