In July 1942, in Kyoto, some Japanese scholars talked about "Modernity". The notion of "Modernity" is not easy to explain: in fact, that word meant (and still means), as in 1942 Japan as in today Middle East, "Occident". However, also the notion of "Occident", like "Modernity", is not easy to explain. The dislike towards the West is still very strong especially in the East. This aversion, that today moves Islamic fundamentalists in particular against USA, exists in other regions of the not Western World too. Of course, there are different reasons to hate the Occident. So, "Occidentalism" represents the way Occident is pictured by its enemies. Our aim is to try to understand the Historical-religious roots of this matter, because we think that "Occidentalism" was born in Occident before being exported in the rest of the world. So, the suicide bombers (shuhada or kamikaze) are not victims of a mysterious pathology : they are motivated by an ideology sinking its roots in the Modern and Contemporary History.
